A LIFE COURSE APPROACH TO LOWER EXTREMITY OA MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION

Course Description

The global burden of disease has shifted from communicable to non-communicable diseases due to advances in medicine, and lower extremity osteoarthritis has emerged as a main contributor to disease burden worldwide. Physical Therapists can play a pivotal role in promoting injury prevention strategies that will decrease sport injuries, managing people with osteoarthritis, and promoting evidence-based self-management strategies for preventing and managing injuries. This course will take a whole disease and life-course approach to managing lower extremity OA. The course will be a combination of lecture, lab, and case presentation.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  1. Explain OA pathophysiology as a ‘whole joint’ phenomenon, risk factors for lower extremity OA with a focus on knee OA, and the burden of lower extremity OA on individuals and society.
  2. Identify evidence-based, non-pharmacological approaches to managing knee OA and will be able to identify OA management guidelines from the American College of Rheumatology and American College of Orthopaedic Surgeons (endorsed by APTA).
  3. Explain and practice the assessment of important elements of the clinical examination including common gait abnormalities, the importance of regional interdependence, rapid manual therapy approaches to rule in/out structures for intervention, and assessment of findings through the lens of clinical phenotyping.
  4. Explain optimal intervention exercise prescription, adjunctive therapies, and manual techniques used in clinical trials for management of hip and knee OA. Learners will practice examination and manual therapy techniques.
  5. Learners will be able to explain the various points of intervention across the lifespan, technologies currently available to support engagement of populations across the lifespan, and practice behavioral strategies for supporting self-management of chronic conditions such as knee OA.
